This peculiar situation can, of course, be explained from a his-torical perspective: Modern Standard German is a kind of hybrid lan-guage in which the grammar and most of the lexicon is based on south-ern German dialects, whereas the pronunciation very much resembles a spelling pronunciation of Low German speakers who have acquired this new language as a prestigious but second language.
